winston riley’s techniques!

Winston Riley had been churning out the hits since the ’60s until someone recently took his life. He is probably most known for Tenor Saw’s ‘Ring The Alarm’, but also recorded 40 year’s worth of other jams. I’ve been meaning to make this mix since the ’90s and just never got around to it, instead getting lost in the Techniques stack of 45s every time I pulled it out in a half-assed attempt to record it. After Studio One, Techniques was the second label that I actively sought sides from after hearing the Fu-Schinikens sample ‘Ring The Alarm’.

Recently, the untimely death of Mr. Riley motivated me to stay in on a Friday night with a pile of 45s and record this mix. Techniques spanned the late 60’s to the 2000’s, but I decided to stick with my favorite era — the 80’s. And that’s about that, less talk, more rock reggae…enjoy! I know I do.

FYI – The song at 27:07, Madoo’s ‘Hotel Fee’ is not really safe for work, unless you work in a brothel or strip club, and even then it’s questionable. But! It’s a total jam.
